JOGLE: Day 1

At 6.09am on Thursday 4th July double amputee, Michael Swain MBE, set off from a wet and windy John O'Groats in an attempt to set a new World Record.

As a result of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Michael lost both legs above the knee whilst serving for 3rd Battalion, The Rifles Regiment in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2009.

Refusing to be defined by his injuries Michael has been keen to find a new challenge to push the boundaries of what is possible on a hand bike.

This epic challenge will be a true test of endurance and require unimaginable strength, determination and courage to complete the 874 miles to Lands End!

65 Degrees North Patron Jonathan Thomson was at the start line to officially wave Michael and the support team off.

Michael and the team encountered some difficult weather between John O'Groats and Inverness (119 miles) with strong headwinds and rain.

Despite having to deal with the grim weather and 2 punctures along the way team spirit was in abundance!

Michael has now been cycling for almost 17 hours and has completed 200 miles... he will need to cover at least 212 miles a day to achieve the World Record!
